Guided Tours

It is personal choice as to whether to have a guided tour or wander at will. Each room has information sheets or a guide sheet is available to purchase in the Entrance Hall. Guided tours of the house are available by prior request and take approximately 45 minutes- 1hr. Allow extra time for the gardens, woodland walk to the beach, lunch and cream tea. (Average visit 2½ – 3 hours inc. gardens, grounds).  Guided tours of the gardens are available by prior request though most groups prefer to wander at will. If you are a special interest group please tell us so that we can arrange a tour with either Sir Hugh or Lady Stucley, or a guide with specific knowledge. For tours with Sir Hugh or Lady Stucley there will be an extra charge; please enquire.

Parking

There is a large flat area adjacent to the house; ample parking for coaches. Drop off by front door.

Disabled Visitors

Hartland Abbey is an old house, originally built in the 12thC.  Consequently access to the main reception rooms and bedrooms is very difficult for wheelchairs. Less able visitors will be able to view most of the main reception rooms; there are chairs to rest on.  The medieval basement, exhibitions, museum, shop and tea room etc are accessible to wheelchairs but regrettably not mobility scooters.  Entry to the house is up wide steps making it unsuitable for a wheelchair ramp. There is a disabled persons WC. We do everything possible to help our less mobile visitors wherever we can.

School Parties etc.

We welcome school visits providing they are properly supervised as many items in the Abbey are easily breakable.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome in the grounds on leads; Guide Dogs only in the house.

Light Lunches and Cream Teas

Delicious home made light lunches and cream teas are served in the characterful Old Kitchen Tea Rooms. We would be very grateful if you could book in advance if possible. Tel. 01237 440044 to book your lunches or teas.

Gift Shop

We have a small, wheelchair accessible, gift shop in the museum selling a good selection of cards, books, mugs, kitchen coordinates etc and a Hartland Abbey range of gifts.

General

Most groups spend from 2 1/2- 3 1/2 hours at Hartland Abbey.  In order to make a longer day out, combine Hartland Abbey and its gardens and grounds with the beautiful and historic St. Nectan’s Church, ‘the Cathedral of North Devon’,  very close by (½ mile). Hartland Abbey has direct access to the South West Coastal Footpath, 1 mile away, so is a good starting point for walking groups to spend the day walking the spectacular coast, finishing up with a delicious cream tea! Hartland Quay, renowned for its spectacular cliff scenery and rocky beach, the scene of many past shipwrecks, is 1 mile away.  The Shipwreck Museum at Hartland Quay is fascinating and well worth a visit too (Tel:01237441218) or www.hartlandquay.com.  

There are many other attractions within easy reach; we would be delighted to help with suggestions.  World renowned Clovelly is only 5 miles away.

Access

Hartland Abbey is easily accessible from M5 Junction 27 and is only 1 mile from stunning Hartland Quay and 5 miles W. of Clovelly, off the A39. Sat Nav Ref = EX39 6DT

Free entrance, tea or coffee for Coach Drivers and Group Leaders.

For larger groups we are able to open at other dates and times; we may also offer a larger discount, please enquire.  Delicious light lunches and homemade cream teas are provided by our Tea Room. Please notify in advance.

No prepayment necessary but it would be appreciated if the group leader could pay at the ticket office on arrival. Card payment or BACS preferred.

Special Opening pre season for Daffodil Day, Sunday 16th March 11 – 4 

Annual Exhibitions: ‘William Stukeley – Saviour of Stonehenge’, ‘History of the Hartland Abbey Estate’, ‘Filming on the Hartland Abbey Estate since 1934’ and displays on ‘A Victorian Honeymoon’ and ‘Falconry by The Hon. Gerald Lascelles’ and many other interesting displays.

Coach access is easy by following brown coach signs in Hartland village to avoid main street. (SAT NAV = EX39 6DT).Follow ‘Coaches’ signs for Hartland Abbey at road junction in the valley. Easy parking and access for coach visitors.
